Bioinformatics Algorithms: An Active Learning Approach is a joint project with Pavel Pevzner from the University of California San Diego. First published in 2014, this textbook is now in its third edition and has become a bestseller in the field of computational biology, achieving adoption by over 200 instructors in 45 countries.
In keeping with my commitment to make educational content as open as possible, the textbook website contains several chapters of the book as well as lectures accompanying every chapter. This site contains links to buy a print copy of the book as well as the online courses that are built upon an interactive version of the textbook, which contains integrated just-in-time programming assignments.
If you are an instructor and would be interested in adopting our book, please contact me! We provide lots of resources for our instructors, including slides and the option to adopt our interactive textbook directly, which is less expensive than the printed book, has integrated homework assessments, and even includes a private grade book.
Each chapter of Bioinformatics Algorithms starts with a biological question. It then teaches the computational approaches needed to address this question from the bottom-up.
Each of the chapter titles below links to the corresponding freely provided chapter at the Bioinformatics Algorithms homepage. The cover shown at the top of this page as well as the chapter cover images were drawn by the talented Randall Christopher. These cartoons find Pavel and me in a different farcical situation (although he is always dressed in Wild West attire, owing to his alter ego as the Russian sheriff of bioinformatics). The images also contain subtle references to topics covered in the chapter; when you read each chapter, how many of the Easter eggs can you find?
